Social Responsibility

We apply the criteria and values of sustainability in our daily activities as a means of defining, evaluating and achieving our objectives:

  1. Protect the environment and people's health.
  2. Create value for the pharmaceutical sector and society as a whole.
  3. Efficiently and safely manage domestic medicines and their packaging.
  4. Contribute to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
  5. Adopt and disseminate the principles of the Circular Economy.
  6. Develop the organisation's human capital.
  7. Engage in dialogue and commitment with our stakeholders.

We were one of the first organisations invited to join the Pact for a Circular Economy, as a key player in the pharmaceutical sector to move towards a more resource-efficient society through the promotion of eco-design and recycling.

In addition, each year we publish our Sustainability Report to publicise our environmental, social and good governance performance. In this way, we maintain our commitment to transparency towards our stakeholders.

Our activity is aligned with 8 of the 17 SDGs of the United Nations 2030 Agenda, which are related to health and the environment.

With the involvement of the entire pharmaceutical sector, we have launched initiatives to contribute to the achievement of the following SDGs:

Circular Economy

We are firmly committed to a sustainable model of production and consumption that minimises waste and reuses it as a new resource.

We therefore promote eco-design to make medicine packaging increasingly lighter, less polluting and more easily recyclable.

Furthermore, once they reach the end of their useful life, the materials of these packages are kept within the economy through recycling, and the medicine residues are recovered energetically, thus creating added value.

Estas son algunas de las acciones impulsadas por SIGRE en el ámbito de la economía circular

At SIGRE we are firmly committed to an increasingly circular and sustainable future. For this reason, we work on initiatives that serve to raise awareness among all our stakeholders about the importance of moving towards a more efficient society in the use of resources.

An example of this type of initiative is our board game SIGREcirculares. Its launch, on the occasion of our 20th anniversary, aims to spread the importance of the transition towards a circular economy.

SIGREcirculares is a game that combines knowledge and fun, with the aim of completing the full cycle of the circular economy, going through each square on the board where the player must answer questions related to this new model of production and consumption that guarantees sustainable growth over time.

In addition, we remind you that this board game "must be kept within reach of children", no matter their age!

Global Pact

In 2009 we formalised our membership of the UN Global Compact, the world's largest corporate citizenship initiative. Three years later, we were elected to the Executive Committee of the United Nations Global Compact Spain.

As part of our commitment to this initiative, we have implemented the 10 Principles of Conduct and Action on human rights, labour standards, environment and anti-corruption into our strategy.

Human Rights

1. Support and respect the protection of fundamental human rights.

2. Ensure that their companies are not complicit in the violation.

Labour

3. Uphold the freedom of association and the effective recognition of the right to collective bargaining.

4. Eliminate of all forms of forced and compulsory labour.

5. The effective abolition of child labour.

6. Support the elimination of discrimination in respect of employment and occupation.

Environment

7. Support a precautionary approach to environmental challenges.

8. Undertake initiatives to promote greater environmental responsibility.

9. Encourage the development and diffusion of environmentally friendly technologies.

Anti-Corruption

10. Work against corruption in all its forms, including extortion and bribery.

Ibero-American Network

Throughout these years, many public and private organisations have been interested in our system of operation, requesting our collaboration for the implementation of a similar model in their countries. For this reason, in 2015 we promoted the creation of the Red Iberoamericana de Programas Posconsumo de Medicamentos (RIPPM)s (RIPPM).

This network enables the exchange of experiences in the management of waste medicines and their packaging between the different countries that make up Ibero-America. Through it, the collection of expired, partially consumed or deteriorated medicines is promoted as a means of caring for the environment and human health and contributing to eradicating counterfeiting of these products.

Furthermore, in order to organise activities and actions to promote awareness of best practices in the management of expired or unused medicines, RIPPM has created the Plataforma Posconsumo de Medicamentos (PPM).

Currently, RIPPM is composed of four programmes: Corporación Punto Azul (Colombia), SINGREM (Mexico), VALORMED (Portugal) and SIGRE (Spain).

Education

We are committed to education as a necessary pillar to achieve an increasingly sustainable society. For this reason, we have launched various initiatives so that students of all ages are aware of the environmental and health importance of recycling medicines.

Designed for students in the final years of primary education, SIGRELANDIA is an educational website where students learn about the life cycle of medicine and the importance of using it properly through a virtual city. Enter SIGRELANDIA:

"Medicines: which, when, how" is a Learning and Service project that aims to raise awareness among students in 3rd and 4th year of ESO or 1st year of Bachillerato in Spain about the proper use of medicines and to help develop certain basic skills through the implementation of different activities.

This Project, after the completion of the pilot test in Catalonia and in collaboration with the Consell de Col·legis Farmacèutics de Catalunya and the University of Barcelona, is made available to all educational centres in Spain, providing Secondary Education teachers with the necessary material for this training.
