As of 2014, more than 21,200 pharmacies SIGRE have a point where they can deposit household packaging and leftover medicines.
By participating in SIGRE, pharmacists fulfil their environmental obligations as dispensers of medicines, while taking on board the principle of shared responsibility according to which all the parties involved in producing and distributing packaged products must contribute to manage the waste generated by the consumption of these products.
The system of collection of waste medicines through pharmacies is recommended and promoted by the Spanish and EU health institutions.
The involvement of pharmacists in SIGRE makes it possible to offer members of the public a collection point close to home.
