Prevention at source

cita One of SIGRE's most important tasks is prevention at source, by rolling out plans to develop eco-design measures to reduce the environmental impact of medicine packaging to make them lighter and using more environmentally friendly materials

In order to prevent the production of waste packaging at source, those in charge of marketing a packaged product must roll out Company Prevention Plans (CPPs), containing measures to reduce the environmental impact of this packaging, by making them lighter and using more environmentally friendly materials.

SIGRE unveiled its 2012-2014 CPP in May 2012. This is a new plan that includes preventive measures to be implemented by pharmaceutical companies over the next three years to reduce the environmental impact of medicine packaging.

This CPP also summarises the main achievements of the sector in this area since 2000, which is when SIGRE assumed responsibility for designing the most appropriate prevention measures for medicine packaging: 1,207 measures applied, affecting 339 million items of pharmaceutical packaging that have made it possible to optimise their size, incorporate more recyclable materials and reduce weight by over 22%.

In March 2013, SIGRE presented the Second CPP 2012-2014 Monitoring Report to the Regional Ministries of the Environment. This report listed the prevention measures and reduction results achieved during 2012.
